completed 2 Page Layout
4/2/2021
|
Although I did not change much between my original double page spread and this final one, I feel that the changes I made were necessary. I first started by changing the color of the text. This might not be easy to see, but the color of the text before was a darker blue color. I felt that this did not match so I changed it to a dark gray. I then changed the size of the text from 12pt font to 12.5pt font. This allows for the reader to see the text a lot clearer. The main part of my double page spread that I changed would be the beginning of each paragraph. Although having a larger first word for each paragraph did not look bad, I was not looking the way I hoped it would. In the layout I chose to use for my double page spread, it was not very compatible with me trying to do this and it was not turning out right. I decided to not use the large first letter for each paragraph and I think that it looks much better.

Completed Table of COntents

|
Notes:Same as with the magazine cover, I felt that I did not need to change many elements of my table of contents. The changes I made between my original table of contents and the first revision of my table of contents involved so much, that I was happy with the result of my first revision. I feel that this page ties in well with the cover page with the colors in the picture and the layout of the page.

Completed magazine cover

|
Notes: For my completed magazine cover, I did not change much. I was very happy with the way my magazine cover came out so I decided to leave it as is. I played around with the text and colors a little bit but in the end went back to the product shown. I also wanted to see if I was set on using this picture I took in Northern Italy so I went through other pictures I had taken but was happy with the way this one looked.

Thoughts: YouTube Video How Social Media Shapes Identity
3/15/2021
It is rare nowadays to find someone without at least one form of social media. Social media influences many different views and opinions. In the TED Talk, Ulrike Schultze talked about how social media and technology have led us to grow and influence ourselves. Schultze also talked about how social media had led us to lead a somewhat double life and that we live different lives through social media than we do in real life.
Social media has influenced me in many ways. I have seen things on social media about a stance on politics or something about a political figure that I then went on to research. I researched this because social media is not always true or reliable so researching it ensured that I got the truth and all the information regarding the topic. Doing research is very important to know what is true and what is false, especially when it comes to information from social media because sometimes those sources are not reliable.
I agree with Ulrike Schultze's stance on social media and how it has changed us as a society. Everyone nowadays is worried about how many likes they got on their picture or who has commented on their post or how many people have reacted to it. I believe that this has made people become more superficial and focus on issues that won't matter in the future. Everything people post on social media is fabricated and is only what you want them to see of them not how life actually is.
Critical Refelction Question 6
3/12/2021
6. The issues raised in the targeting of national and local audiences (specifically British) by international or global institutions.
The “big guy” in music media would be the record labels. They control artists and tender everything to the audiences in order to gain the most amount of revenue they can. An example would be Sony Music Entertainment. Sony Music Entertainment produces music internationally. Although it an American company, it is global. The “little guy” in the music industry would be independent artists. They would be considered a small player in the music industry because it is harder for them to gain traction and gain an audience without the help and support of big record labels. There are definitely independent artists that do make it big without the help of a record label because of how much talent they have, such as, Ed Sheeran and the Beatles. Independent artists, depending on how big their audience is usually produce internationally, especially with all the music streaming services we have.
Record labels and independent artists typically produce their media by the artist recording the music in a recording studio. If the independent artist is very small, they find ways to produce their music at home by themselves. Both record labels and independent artists reach their audience by social media. Social media can be a way for artists to grow and gain a following, or for their already existing following to keep up with what they are doing/producing. Small independent artists usually only stick to releasing their music on streaming services, while big record labels usually try to release the music on the streaming services along with creating CDs and records. An advantage of being the “big guy” is that you have more access to making the artist big and it is easier for artists under a record labels management to gain a following. A disadvantage is sometimes the record label has too much control over the artist and it blocks the creative freedom. An advantage of being the little guy is that you are not tied down and do not have to follow anyone’s rules when it comes to your product. A disadvantage of being the little guy would be that it is a lot harder to gain an audience and get your feet up off the ground without the support of a big record label.

Thoughts on Article: How the news changes the way we think and behave
3/9/2021
Article Link:
This article talks about how the news can change our perception, the content of our dreams, and how it can increase our chances of having a heart attack. New coverage can cause changes to your mental health, including an increase in depression and an increase in stress/anxiety. The effects of watching the news are also "negativity bias," where we start to pay attention to the worst things around us. The news is accidentally changing, or "warping," the viewers' outlook on reality becuase it is influencing our thinking.
I agree with this article and their claim that the news can change our perception. Since the COVID-19 virus started, people have had more time on their hands to sit at home. This led to more people watching the news. I noticed that since more people started watching the news, including my parents/family, they started to get angrier and our conversations started shifting from light-hearted things to the serious, depressing events happening in our country/world. It is important to talk about these things, but when you start watching the news more, the events they talk about tend to be all you worry about.

Table of contents revison 1
03/03/2021
|
Although I really enjoyed the look of my first table of contents, I felt that I should change it to match the aesthetic of my magazine cover more. On my first table of contents, I used multiple pictures on the left side of the page to display what will come in the articles on the future pages. I decided to keep it more simple with the one picture on the left side of the page for a couple reasons. The picture of the sunset in Lake Garda matches the color scheme of the magazine cover and ties the two pages together. I also chose just the one picture because it looks more clean and simple.

Critical Reflection Question 5
2/25/2021
5. Discuss the ways in which the candidates’ (this is you) own experiences of media consumption (how you use, access, and produce) illustrate wider patterns and trends in audience behaviour.
Along with most people, I obtain my music through a streaming app. I personally use Apple Music, but there are many different streaming services available such as Spotify, SoundCloud, and Amazon Music. Consumption of music has grown tremendously over time starting from vinyl’s and ending up at downloadable music and music streaming has been a huge jump. The access of music in todays world is so much easier and more efficient than it used to be. All of the music I listen to either comes from streaming services or the radio. I also see all the advertising for music I listen to on Social Media. Media companies have taken advantage of the fact that almost everyone nowadays has social media. It is a good way for them to inform people of the artists new music and is cheaper than other advertising methods.

Magazine Cover Revision 1
2/19/2021
|
When comparing the first product of my magazine cover to this revision, you can see the several changes I have made. First of all, I completely changed the layout of the cover. I felt that the initial product was a little messy and did not represent the magazine cover ideas I had in mind. I went with a beautiful picture of a sunset of Lake Garda, Italy for the cover picture instead of the picture used before with the bright green and pink scenery. I feel that this picture is cleaner and more eye pleasing than the previous one. I also changed the font and title of the magazine. The font used in this revision is simple, but professional. The title I used initially was about European travel, but once I looked into what I really wanted my magazine to be about, I chose to specify by changing it to Italian travel. When I created the mockup, I tried using a cute font but it did not give off the right feel for this magazine.

Text Analysis Question 5
2/18/2021
What significance does the continuing development of digital media technology have for media institutions and audiences?
The development of digital media technology has a big impact on media institutions and audiences. Digital media technology development affects media institutions by causing their focus to shift from advertising their media for purposes of putting it in movie theatres or CD's and records, to putting their media onto streaming services. Services such as Spotify and Apple Music are streaming service subscriptions that people pay for monthly to listen to as many sings as they want without having to buy a hard copy or individually purchase every song. This is significant for digital media technology companies because they can then shift their focus and advertising to streaming services. The shift to streaming services for digital media companies has also been significant on audiences. For example, it is now a lot easier for a media company to advertise a movie through social media and they can more likely reach their targeted audience more efficiently. It also helps to accommodate audiences by instead of relying on movies doing well in theatres, they just put them on streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu that way people are 1. more likely to watch it, and 2. it is easier for audiences to watch it from the comfort of their homes.

Critical Reflection Question 4

4. How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
I integrated technology in all the aspects of my magazine project. I used technology to create everything from the cover page to the ending page. I first started off by using a website called ‘Photopea’ to create my magazine cover but found that it was hard to use and had some issues, so I completed the magazine cover on Microsoft Word. I recently looked back at my magazine cover and realized I was not satisfied with how it looked so I took to another website called ‘Canva.’ I found that I liked ‘Canva’ much better than using Microsoft word and it was more user friendly than ‘Photopea.’ ‘Canva’ had more layouts and is designed more for projects like this, helping me create a project I really enjoy. I also used the internet to research other types of travel magazines so that I could get inspiration and have a good idea of what I wanted my layout to be, and how I wanted the overall magazine to look.

Critical Reflection Question 3

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project? Explain research, using different applications, layout and design of your magazine or video.
Throughout this project I feel that my skills have developed in many different aspects. In the beginning, when I first started trying to design my magazine, I learned different techniques and different styles that should be used that are more appealing to the eye. I tried to use a photoshopping website to create the layout for my magazine cover but after many trials and errors I ended up going the simple route with Microsoft word because it was the easiest and most efficient way, I could make the magazine cover I was envisioning. For example, when designing the cover, the first picture I chose had darker lighting and I had to use weird color text to get the words to stand out. Fortunately, I learned that using a background picture with better lighting will help the layout and appeal of your magazine cover. I also did research to see what different travel magazines looked like to take inspiration from and create my own. I knew that I wanted mine to be different and stand out but also be something that the audience in the travel community would be willing to read.

Critical Review Question 2
1/25/2021
2. How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?
When producing a media text, especially a magazine, the main element you need to work on is the appeal to your audience. The more appealing the product is to the audience, the more likely they are to purchase it. On the cover of my magazine, the picture in the background is a beautiful place that is going to be featured later on in the articles. When someone sees this, they will think of how beautiful it is and want to visit the destination. This person is more inclined to purchase the magazine if they feel intrigued to read about the destination and hopefully visit there.
If I were planning on releasing my magazine as a real media text, I would market it in places such as grocery stores and possibly online markets. You usually see most magazines being sold in stores or online so I would try and sell my product there, but also use unconventional ways of getting my product out to the public. I would try and see if there was a way, I could create an ad for my product and distribute the ad on travel blogs and websites. The authors of those blogs or websites could also use my product as a source so when audiences are reading an article about where to go on vacation, they will know that my magazine is a good place to look for the information they need.

critical review questions

1. How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
In my magazine cover, I use many conventions to allow it to be appealing to the audience. I used different types of conventions in my magazine cover so that it would be appealing to the audience reading it. I made sure that the cover of my magazine is eye-catching to draw in and attract the attention of the audience. In order to do this, I used bright colors and an attractive font. Along with the bright colors, I used interesting headlines that are more likely to draw in an audience. When creating the magazine cover, I kept in mind elements of page layouts and structure of the elements. Utilizing the page layout right is very important in allowing the readers to receive the information.
Social groups are represented in my magazine cover by appealing to certain social groups that are more inclined to travel. When designing a magazine cover, you want to design it so that it is appealing for your intended audience. If the people who are more inclined to read your magazine does not have an initial attraction to it, it will not do good. Usually, social groups with younger aged people or older aged people are more inclined to travel rather than middle-aged social groups, so I made sure that my magazine cover was marketed towards those social age groups.

sopranos sound writeup
1/25/2021
When the scene opens, you can hear pretty upbeat music as if it is coming from the car radio. A woman then opens the door and calls his name to come into the office. Once the flashback starts, he is narrating the whole time and explaining what is happening. Suspenseful music also starts to play. We start to hear the quacking of the ducks when he is near the pool, then he starts to explain that they showed up a couple weeks ago. We can also hear the splashing of the water the ducks and Mr. Soprano are making. Once the camera pans to inside the house, we can hear the mother talking to the kids and the daughter talking to her friend. Upbeat music starts playing instead of suspenseful music.
This media text uses both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. In most of the clip, the main character is narrating what he perceives to happen and his feelings about it, non-diegetic. They also put in a soundtrack that only the audience can hear, to set the tone for the scene, along with extra sound effects. In other parts, you can hear dialogue between characters and natural occurring sounds/environmental sounds, such as duck noises and the water in the pool. He actors can hear each other speaking and the sound made by the characters in the kitchen making them diegetic.

Blog Entry Media context: Issues raised by media ownership
12/4/2020
Every type of media is controlled by a specific owner or owners. These owners of the media context are responsible for producing the film and distributing it to the audiences. These corporations that may own the right to a movie need funding to carry out production and distribution/advertising. The funding towards the distribution of the media and the advertising is very important along with the advertising strategies they use. If the owners have more funding, they will be able to use better advertising strategies; therefore, bringing in a larger audience. Cross media convergence is also very important.
Cross media convergence is when companies come together vertically or horizontally (or both) to gain access to bigger stars and a better distribution networks for their films. When these companies work together, it is called synergy and leads to more benefits for the companies and media context itself. This is very important for companies because it causes the media context to be more successful due to it attracting a mass audience because they are well known causing more people watch the film.
There is constantly new technology being introduced on the world of media whether it having to be at different levels of production, distribution, marketing and at the point of consumption. Digital distribution is a level of media that has to do with audio, video. Software, and console/ video games where they use the internet and physical distributing methods. Digital cinemas are a transmission of a film to the movie theatre/cinema where they mostly use digital technology. The spread of such technologies for institutions and audiences is very significant in aiding companies to reach a wider spread audience. Technology convergence is also very important for companies and audiences. It helps the viewers to watch the media context on different devices, therefore being better suited for their needs and more accessible for the audiences leading to more revenue from different platforms for the company.
Although companies who are producing and distributing media reach national and local audiences by international or global institutions, issues still arise. The first issue would be with Independent institutions. These institutions, because they are independent, can nor afford above the line marketing meaning there marketing and advertising strategies will not be that good and the company can miss out on potential audiences. Independent institutions also only target to a small audience due to their low budgets. The next intuition is Conglomerate institutions, who have no problem with targeting audiences because they are vertically and horizontally integrated leading them to be able to afford advertising and distribution to larger more widespread audiences. This also leads the company to have be accessible to more cross-media convergence and synergy.
Media consumption is very interesting because it can illustrate wider patterns/trends in audience’s behavior. For example, the Marvel franchise, owned by Disney, uses many different types of advertising and distribution techniques to promote their media. Marvel will create a trailer for one of their new superhero movies where they show popular characters from other movies within the marvel universe to draw in watchers that enjoy the character. For example, in the Avengers Endgame trailer you can see that the superhero Spiderman will be in it. Spiderman is a very popular superhero that appeals to a wide variety of audiences and people who enjoyed the Spiderman movies are more inclined to watch this one, leading there to be a larger audience.

AICE MS Test: Part 2 Question 1 Practice
11/20/2020
The exam has two parts; the second part is answering 1 of two questions. The one provided below is for the first question option.
You must be able to discuss based on the criteria listed below.
Refer to specific examples from one media area chosen from:
• film
• music
• print
• radio
• video games.
2 How far is marketing important in the media area you have studied?
Although we have only really studied print, if you have some knowledge and can give specific examples, you may choose any of the other media to use as part of the discussion. You will later be provided with some sample responses to check your work.
Marketing is very important and beneficial to the media I have studied. A film needs to market to potential viewers in order for them to be informed of the film and be engaged in the film even before it comes out. The effectiveness of the marketing used by the film producers is crucial for the number of viewers and the engagement they get on their film. The media I have studied is a film named Guardians of the Galaxy. It came out in 2014 where our media and access to marketing kept increasing and growing. This movie was made by Marvel Production who has an amazing marketing team. Although everyone knows that most Marvel movies will be successful, Marvel still needs to Marvel to get out the word that they have a new movie coming out. The more Marvel markets, the more viewers they are likely to have. This tool of marketing is very beneficial for production companies because it leads them to make a higher revenue from the movie.

AICE Sample 2: Video Question

Question 1:
Discuss the ways in which the extract from the video constructs meaning through the following: • camera shots, angles, movement and composition • sound • mise-en-scène • editing. [50] Candidates will be assessed on their ability to understand how meaning is constructed in a media text through the analysis of different technical areas. Marks are awarded for three different criteria: Explanation/argument/analysis (max 20) Use of examples (max 20) Terminology (max 10) There are many contributing factors that lead a cinematic work to look professional and be successful. The main factors include camera work, sound, mise-en-scene, and editing. The introduction shown of the first few minutes of ‘Mr. Robot’ did really well in introducing and establishing all of these factors. The introduction of this television show leaves you intrigued to find out what is going to happen next. I really enjoyed the camera work used so far in this introduction. It starts out with a shot of him on the subway. It feels as if the camera is following him around or watching what is happening like a “fly on the wall” but in his perspective, without watching as if you are him. After the subway shot, it cuts to him walking into an office, where we assume he works. The camera is following him around so the audience can learn more about the main character. Cuts to the main character walking through what looks to be New York while he is eating. It makes the audience feel as if they are walking next to him. It then cuts to Elliot, the main character, in an office talking to a lady that we learn is his therapist/psychiatrist. In this introduction they use music, along with background and ambient sounds that add to the production. When the scene opens, you can hear the subway car, soft chatter from the people, and a homeless man on the subway screaming. Then shortly after, you hear the main character start to narrate as if you are listening to the thoughts in his mind. Suspenseful music is plays in the background to lead you wondering what will happen next and keep you intrigued. Once he walks into his boss’s office, the music stops, and you can her distant phones from the workers at their desks. Once in the office, you hear a woman and a man arguing. When it cuts to a scene at a bar, you can hear the loud music and loud but indistinct talking of the people inside. Sound and music really helps to establish the mood and tone trying to be portrayed in the text. Mise-en-scène includes the scenery and the setting used a text. This includes lighting, props, costumes, and expressions from the actors. Lighting is also good for establishing mood in a scene. The lighting throughout the introduction text is well lit letting it establish a good mood in the text. They do not use many props in this clip of the episode. The costumes used in this text tell us that it is happening in modern day. You can tell that the office is his place of work because when he takes off his jacket, he is wearing the uniform. When the main character is not at work, he is wearing darker clothes, which can also contribute to his mysteriousness. Facial expressions help us know what the characters are feeling. Throughout the clip, Elliot’s’ facial expressions are very serious. His friend Angela seems upset with him based on her facial expressions and the tone of her voice. The editing makes the audience think that he is saying what he thinks then you hear a faint voice calling his name and it snaps back to reality where he has not yet answered the psychiatrist’s questions |

TOC Layouts

Vertical TOCI chose this TOC layout because I like the modern loom of it. I also enjoyed how simplistic it is. I feel that this layout will match my frontpage concept because it is simple.
|
Picture TOCI chose this TOC layout because I really liked how it incorporated pictures that will be shown in the articles as the focal points of the layouts. This layout could also match my frontpage concept because I have a large amount of pictures and this is a good way to use all of them.
|
Designed TOCI chose this TOC layout because I liked how it was kind of a mix of the first two layouts I listed. I like the modern look and the size of the pictures. I feel that this layout matches my frontpage concept the least. Although I really like this layout, the colors and fonts do not go well with the frontpage concept.

Fargo Notes/Response Comparison
10/20/2020
Notes COmparison The Notes in the example candidate response were ore organized than the notes I took were. I did not separate my notes into categories, I just wrote down what I thought of in that moment. It would probably be better for me to organize the notes I take that way when it comes time to write the response, I will be more prepared and will be quicker because I will be able to find all the information. In my notes, I did not pay as much attention to the sound as the example notes did. They took notes on everything relating to noise not just the background music. It will be important for me to pay closer attention to the sound in the future, so I can get the full affect of the scene. Although I took a good amount of notes, I did not go into as much depth and detail in my notes as the example candidate did. The example response also touched on more of the camerawork then I did. This is extremely important for me in the future because camerawork can either make or break a scene. You want to use specific camerawork to portray a specific mood. When analyzing a text I will make sure to take more notes and go into more detail so that I can reach all of the criteria in the text.

Response Comparison In the example response, it jumps right into the thoughts and analysis of the text. I felt that in my response, it was important for me to start off my explaining how important the introduction of a text is and describing what effect the introduction to the Fargo video had on me. The example candidate response used more descriptive and detailing words than I did. Although I feel that my response was good and touched on some very important things, I could have went into more detail and used more descriptive words to add more depth to my analysis. I feel that in my text analysis, I did a very good job of explaining everything. I feel that I touched all of the elements of mise-en-scene very well, just like the candidate response did. I admit I probably could have explained the mise-en-scence a little bit more but it was still a good response. The example candidate response touched on the main character and how he was established. For future responses to come, it will be important for me to touch on this so that we can understand the introduction scenes better. It would be good for me to talk more about what is happening in the scenes rather than just the mise-en-scene or camerawork. This will help establish the reasoning behind the element I discussed in my response.

Fargo Video Notes/Responses

My Fargo Video Notes
Example Fargo Video Notes/Response |
My Fargo Video Candidate Response Openings or Introductions to a television series or movie are crucial in setting to scene and story. The introduction to Fargo worked really well in establishing enigma for the rest of the series to solve. The introduction to this television series does not give away too much. It shows that the main character, Lester, has killed his wife and that he calls someone else for help, but does not show us who or what he attempts to do in covering his tracks. The introduction leaves you wanting to know what happens next.
The camerawork in the opening of this series is very interesting. The introduction, is mostly filmed as if you are a "fly on the wall" watching. In some scenes, the main character is looking straight into the camera and it is as if he is talking to you. The camerawork also goes along with the character to give you perspective on him by going back and forth with angels to show his facial expressions. At one point right after he kills her, the camera pans up to a poster that says, “what if you’re right and they’re wrong?” This is great cinematography because it shows you what the character is seeing and the regrets going through his mind. The placement of music and sound in this piece is not like others. There is no music in the scenes until after the main character kills his wife. The music they use in the scene after his kills his wife is eerie to create suspense and adds a sense of anxiousness for what is going to happen next. Mise-en-scène is the scenery and the setting used in the event including lighting, props, costumes, and expressions from the actors. Lighting is a big factor and really sets the tone for the scene. The lighting in the Fargo introduction is dim and slightly dark to add suspense and drama to the scene. From the scenery and props in the scenes you can see that they live in a middle-class area but also might struggle a little with money because he is trying to fix the washer by himself. The costumes being shown in these scenes show that they may have just come home from work and are apart of the working class society. Actors expressions can either make or break the scene. If they are not portraying the exact expressions they need to be, it can not come across the right way to the viewer. The filmers and directors did a good job at showing the main characters facial expressions throughout the scenes. For example, after you see Lester kill his wife, you can see him get up and regret what he has done. You can see the actors scared facial expressions while he is trying to think of ways to hide the evidence. The actor did a very good job expressing the feelings of his character in these scenes so the viewers understand. If the editing of a piece is not done correctly or seamlessly, it can look messy and cheap. The editing is continuous in the introduction to the Fargo series. The good editing in this piece helps to create engagement of the views and lead you to wonder what will happen next. |
Intertextuality Blog Post
9/24/2020
- Intertextuality is when one text makes reference to another text or the relationships between texts.
- 3 types of intertextuality defined:
- Indirect Intertextuality(accidental): When every producer is inspired by everything that they have seen unavoidably, meaning that there are traces of other texts within the producers own text even when they are not explicit.
- Direct intertextuality(obligatory): When the producer makes a reference to a text explicitly.
- Optional Intertextuality: when the producer is making a reference to another text but the recognition of the reference is not vital to the text.
